While the "stage" or setting of this poem is certainly religious, I wonder if the poet is not trying to communicate a more universal truth beyond a strictly Christian reading of it. About how some journeys (our life journey?) change us, to the point that our "origin" is no longer "home". If we return from where we came, we will feel like strangers, because we have changed.
