This poem reflects my everyday porch life at home by the sea on Pender Island BC Canada. We can see both neighbours sea viewing verandahs and at first we thought of erecting a screen but soon realized that living on an island can be lonely without connecting to our neighbours. We like it this way and we have learned to respect each others space and privacy without feeling pressured to chat every time we see one another.

Sean, your reflection on this one rests on the contrast of the well-lit/dark : public/private. I see also a contrast in the inward/outward : substance/form. I think the poet also wants us to see past the light. Indeed, the poet has gone into a deep dark (I imagine) pine forest to see the Moon, and to note not only it's well lit face, but to see and relish it's deeper and fuller darkness, which holds more. Indeed, you won't see the stars, or the dark side of the Moon, from a well-lit porch, but you must go and sit still in a dark wood to see more.
